Willie: Puppy Love & Typography

ROLE: GRAPHIC DESIGNER, AUTHOR

This classroom project challenged us to design a limited-edition zine that mastered typographic hierarchy, page composition, and narrative pacing—all while documenting a day in the life of my newly adopted puppy—Willie. Through stark black-and-white photography and deliberate type treatments, I translated her playful energy into a visual rhythm, using dynamic layouts to mirror her movements—tight, erratic kerning for her zoomies, and open, flowing compositions for quiet moments.

Design Approach.

Working within a minimalist black-and-white palette, I structured the zine as a 24-hour cycle of Willie's day, using typography as the primary storytelling device. High-contrast photography captured her routines, while dynamic type treatments mirrored her energy. The restrained approach (no color, no decorative elements) forced every design decision to pull double duty, transforming basic paper stock and ink into an expressive narrative where form and content became inseparable.
